Plants vs. Zombies 2: Top 10 tips, hints, and cheats to pass levels faster

Plants vs. Zombies 2 is the sequel to Popcap's original, amazing, mega-hit, but it's also a completely new, completely different thing. It's freemium now, which means it's free to play, but it tries to encourage you to pay for extras via in-app purchase (IAP). Some people love that model. Some people hate it. We're not here to judge. We're just here to help you make the most of Plants vs. Zombies 2 no matter how you choose to play... or pay. And that means, of course, we're giving you our absolute best tips, tricks, and out-and-out cheats!

1. Maximize your Sunflower plant power!

Plants vs. Zombies 2: Top 10 tips, hints, and cheats to pass levels faster

Just like the first Plants vs. Zombies, Sunflowers are incredibly important. You want to aim for 2 rows of Sunflowers on each level, so they can support all the rest of your plant purchasing. Combine them with Potato Mines to cover your Sunflower planting, and you're pretty much set!

2. When supplies are limited, get the most bang for your plant bucks

When supplies are limited, get the most bang for your plant bucks

On levels where money or plants are limited, place plants that have area-of-effect attacks - Threepeater, Snapdragons, etc. - in lanes 2 and 4 and they'll cover the whole lawn for you.

3. Use plant food on a plant to to get an instant attack

Feed a plant plant food to to get an instant attack

You can use plant food to make a plant that's still in the middle of its refresh time "wake up" and attack immediately. This is especially useful for Coconut Cannons.

Note: This trick won't keep a plant "awake", it'll go back to its refreshing sleep immediately after its attack is over.

4. Kill the app to reshuffle the Purple World deck

Kill the app to reshuffle the Purple World deck

Don't like the cards you're dealt in the Purple World level? No problem. Just hit the Home button to exit Plants vs. Zombies 2, then double-click the Home button to open multitasking, then either touch and hold the Plants vs. Zombies 2 icon until it jiggles and tap the X to kill it (iOS 6), or grab the Plants vs. Zombies 2 card and toss it away (iOS 7). Once that's done, re-launch Plants vs. Zombies 2, and you'll have a whole new deck of cards to choose from!

5. Use Bonk Choy and Spikeweeds to survive Pirate World

Use Bonk Choy and Spikeweeds to survive Pirate World

If you're having trouble surviving Last Stand III in the Pirate World, try this formation. Using only Bonk Choy and Spikeweeds, you'll be able to complete the level without even looking. The Spikeweeds don't get eaten so the damage the zombies without ever having to be replaced. Any zombies that make it to the end get boxed into oblivion by the Bonk Choys.

6. Escape the level to prevent loss of a treasure yeti

Escape the level to prevent loss of a Treasure Yeti

If you are about to lose a level with the Treasure Yeti zombie, or if he is about to escape, you can hit Restart to redo the level and the Yeti and his treasure will be waiting for you when you come back.

7. Complete the level to get your Treasure Yetis treasure

Complete the level to get your Treasure Yeti's treasure

Don't think you can simply kill the yeti, get your treasure, and immediately exit the map without completing the level. PVZ2 don't play that. In order to get your happy lunch box of treasure, you need to both kill the yeti and complete the level.

8. Use Kernel-pults plants vs. Seagull Zombies

Use Kernel-pults plants vs. Seagull Zombies

The best way to knock a Seagull Zombie into the water, if they're flying over the sea, is by using a Kernel-pult. So, if you see Seagull Zombies in the line-up for a level, make sure you arm yourself with a Kernel-pult!

9. Know your zombie patterns

Zombies always attack in the same pattern, so if you make a mistake, remember the pattern for when you set up to replay the level. For example, if a regular zombie starts in lane 1, then another comes in lane 4, then another in lane 6, they'll do the same thing when you replay the level, and you can set up your plants in lane 1, 4, and 6, to take care of them.

10. Always have a roof-top plant catapult, especially a Kernel-pult

Always have a roof-top plant catapult, especially a Kernel-pult

In Plants vs. Zombies 2, it's always beneficial to have at least one rooftop plant (Melon-pult, Cabbage-pult, Kernel-pult, etc.) on hand. When you use plant food on them, they will hit every zombie on screen. I usually prefer the Kernel-pult as it launches butter and immobilizes the zombies, giving you more time to implement your other strategies.

Popcap shows off new Dark Ages content for Plants vs. Zombies 2 at E3 2014

The folks at Popcap were at E3 2014 giving us a sneak peek at the next update for Plants Vs Zombies 2. The mushrooms you know and love from the original game are back, offering a unique way to gather sunshine points at nighttime. Now the free mushroom attackers will wither away over time, but you also have a new plant which will make a zombie drop additional sunshine as it shambles towards your stalwart front line.

The plant food power-up mechanic introduced in PvZ 2 also applies to the new plants; when fed, the biggest of the mushrooms will unload a volley of spore attacks and push enemies far back to where they started. The hypnosis mushroom is making a comeback as a premium plant which can turn enemies against their former undead brethren.

Speaking of walkers, these zombies are all getting a medieval overhaul. One new special zombie in particular has donned full plate armour, making it one of the toughest zombies in the game to date. Seeing as this update is titled "part 1", I'm eager to see how else the medieval theme spreads through Plants Vs Zombies 2. Expect the update to arrive on June 26th. How many of you guys are still playing the game? Any thoughts on seeing the familiar mushrooms again?

Plants vs. Zombies 2 goes medieval in latest update

The Plants vs. Zombies 2 update we scoped out at E3 is now available! The Dark Ages Part 1 brings back the mushrooms we all know and love from the original, affording a new and interesting way of collecting sunshine. The Zombies are following with the theme, donning full plate and sending in frenzied berserkers that fling pellets back at you.

Plant food gives some unique new abilities to your three different mushroom types, plus there's a familiar premium plant, the hypnosis mushroom, which turns one of the zombies to fight for your defensive lines.

As great as this update is, it's only Episode 1 of The Dark Ages, so expect some more medieval-themed goodness in Plants vs. Zombies 2 sooner than later. How many of you guys are playing PvZ 2 still? How far into the campaign are you?

Best strategy games for iPhone

We've dug up the very best strategy games that you can put on your iPhone. We've got a good range of tactical combat, global domination, tower defense, real-team strategy, and whatever else fit the bill. Keep in mind we're squaring off puzzle games and board games into separate categories and will be rounding them up shortly.

Grab your thinkin' caps, because these are the best strategy games for iPhone.

Anomaly 2

Anomaly 2 brings the same reverse-tower-defense mechanics as the original, but the updated graphics, new transforming tanks, and multiplayer mode make this sequel more than adequate. In the multiplayer mode, one player gets to be in charge of the alien defense, complete with consumable special abilities and resource management.

If you're looking for loads of tactical depth and eye candy to boot, Anomaly 2 delivers.

Autumn Dynasty Warlords

Autumn Dynasty Warlords is a finger-friendly real-time strategy and turn-based empire management game set in feudal China. Players direct a varied force across a wide range of terrain types in a single-player campaign or skirmish mode. Commands are made with a variety of gestures, each leaving a stylish calligraphic trail (though standard button input is included for more traditional control). Between matches you'll deal with some light persistent base-building and territory control, complete with espionage and diplomacy.

Autumn Dynasty Warlords is the best traditional real-time strategy game you'll find on mobile, and a fine empire-builder to boot.

Eufloria

Eufloria is a deceptively calming, abstract strategy game where players have to send swarms of spores between asteroids to germinate them and produce resource-bearing trees. This gets tricky once you encounter other life forms that are aiming to do the same. There are 25 levels in story mode, plus one-off skirmish modes to keep the fun coming after that. Levels are procedurally generated, so no two matches will be the same. If you'd like something more laid back, there's a relaxed mode, while the dark matter mode makes things considerably more challenging.

Though the music is bound to make you nod off at least a little, stay on your toes - Eufloria requires careful planning and attention throughout.

Kingdom Rush Frontiers

Kingdom Rush Frontiers brings the acclaimed tower defense game to the next level. In addition to the same goofy, frantic fantasy tower defense that you remember from the first Kingdom Rush, there are a whole slew of new heroes to pick from, each with their own special abilities that you can upgrade as you progress through the single-player campaign. Of course, there are also a ton of new towers, enemies, and bosses to explore across a wide range of difficulty ratings.

Though Kingdom Rush Frontiers can be extremely challenging, its lighthearted take on tower defense keeps you coming back for more.

Plants vs. Zombies 2

Plants vs. Zombies is a venerable iOS franchise for a good reason. The bizarre premise of protecting your back lawn from hordes of undead with sunflowers is certainly part of that, but there's a lot of tactical thinking in terms of plant choices before the attack begins, and placement. In Plants vs. Zombies 2, you're taken back in time to defend against zombies dressed in era garb, and try out all sorts of new mechanics. The zombies are getting smarter, and challenge your reaction speed in a number of ways, though you also have a whole new complement of plants to use. Stages also have new terrain features to keep every round fresh. Plant food can be collected to super-charge any plant when things get especially hairy.

All in all, Plants vs. Zombies 2 presents deep strategic gameplay in a fun, colorful package.

Rymdkapsel

Rymdkapsel combines Tetris-style base building and real-time strategy resource management in a minimalist and finger-friendly package. Players have to build residences, feed the populace, and expand towards objectives, all while fending off wave after wave of progressively more difficult enemy air strikes. Rymdkapsel is decidedly unique in both its art and play style.

Rymkapsel prunes away all of the extras in real-time strategy games and leaves players with a clean, pure experience.

XCOM

XCOM's mobile port keeps the addictiveness of the game's tactical combat in one piece. Players form an elite squad of secret soldiers attempting to defend humanity against an impending alien threat. Over the course of that mission, players recruit, equip, and improve squad members. Missions require careful consideration for who you take along - picking the wrong guy from the wrong job can mean a quick failure. In addition to the extensive single-player campaign, there's also online multiplayer so you can test your skills against friends online. Combined with the full-bodied base-building and research elements, XCOM has earned its venerable status across all platforms.

Hardened strategy fans shouldn't bat an eyelash at the pricetag; XCOM is worth every penny.

Civilization Revolution 2

In Civilization Revolution 2 players build an empire starting with a single humble city. They then harvest the resource tiles nearby, expand their nation in science, culture, religion, and military, and achieve global dominance through warfare or diplomacy. The refreshed Civilization Revolution features new wonders like the Red Cross and Silicon Valley, new units like the Stealth Bomber and Jet Fighter, leaders such as JFK and Churchill, and research options for Modern Warfare, Modern Medicine, Lasers, and Information Technology. To top it all off, there are going to be new scenarios, including one which is Revolutionary War-themed.

Civilization Revolution 2 is the perfect game for keen micromanagers.

First Strike

First Strike is a real-time strategy game of global nuclear domination. Players have to invest in research to improve their visibility and defenses, while also building up the needed stockpiles to destroy and conquer other nations around the planet. Though the setting may be dark, First Strike enjoys some highly polished graphics and addictive gameplay.

Fans of Risk looking for a modern upgrade will want to try out First Strike.

Plague Inc.

In Plague Inc., players gently guide and evolve a disease in an attempt to wipe out humanity while battling government research efforts. Increasing transmission, deadliness, and severity are all core to success, but also ensuring that you have enough healthy hosts to thrive on. Different disease types enjoy different characteristics and offer new strategic options. It's a grim premise, but an entertaining one.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 gets wizardly in Dark Ages Part 2

$

Plants vs. Zombies 2 has had another content update, continuing on the original Dark Ages update we saw back at E3. Dark Ages Part 2 introduces a new boss battle, a new Arthurian challenge, two new plants (magnetshroom and peanut), 10 new levels, and both a wizard zombie and a king zombie who are bound to make your life difficult.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 continues to offer a rich and (mostly) balanced take at freemium strategy. Players have to pick a selection of plants, gather sunlight, and find just the right time to drop super-powering plant food on their defensive lines. There are also gesture-based power ups if you need a hand with the particularly tough stages. Other stages will drag you out to the far future, the pirate seas, and other exotic eras where the zombies get to dress up all fancy-like.

How far into Plants vs. Zombies 2 are you? How did you find Part 1 of the Dark Ages content?

Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time, the follow up to the extremely popular Plants vs. Zombies, will be released worldwide July 18 exclusively for iOS devices. Additionally, Plants vs. Zombies 2 will have an invite-only preview next week at the E3 conference in Los Angeles. Popcap says the new game takes place across time, with new plants to help players defend against the zombie horde.

Designed from the ground up as a live service, the ever-expanding universe of Plants vs. Zombies 2 continues the epic struggle of plants defending your brainz against zombies from your backyard through the vast reaches of time, both past and future. New worlds with new levels, plants, zombies and new ways to play will be released on an ongoing basis. Leveraging the touch interface of Apple’s popular mobile devices, Plants vs. Zombies 2 includes all-new touch-screen power-ups that enable players to “break the fourth wall” and interact with zombies directly, as well as via plant defenses.

Unlike the original game, Plants vs. Zombies 2 will be a free-to-play game. A free initial download, the game will contain a number of in-app purchases for upgrades and items, though Popcap insists that players will be able to access every level of the game without paying anything. The exact nature of the in-app purchases has yet to be announced though they will probably be similar to those in the original Plants vs. Zombies. It’s good to know at least that the main game will be available without the need for an in-app purchase.

Anyone excited for the July 18 launch of Plants vs. Zombies 2 should prepare to be disappointed; it's been delayed. It feels like we've been waiting an eternity already for it, but without explaining why, Popcap took to Twitter to break the bad news:

Plants vs. Zombies 2, originally slated for a July 18th release, will now be released later in the summer. Stay tuned for more details."

A bitter blow, not made any easier having built up our excitement for the game after seeing it in action recently at E3. "Later in the summer" is distinctly vague, so we're back to not really knowing when it will land. Disappointing, for sure. Who else was looking forward to this one?
